Za názvom filmu, ktorý vychádza z archaického japonského slova znamenajúceho „príbeh o duchovi,“ sa skrýva antológia adaptácií štyroch ľudových príbehov. Chudobný samuraj sa žení pre peniaze s tragickými dôsledkami. Muž uväznený v snehovej búrke je zachránený Yuki, snehovou pannou, no jeho záchrana prichádza za cenu. Slepec hudobník Hoichi je nútený vystupovať pre publikum duchov. Autor rozpráva príbeh samuraja, ktorý vidí odraz ďalšieho bojovníka vo svojej šálke s čajom.
