Domov a preč je umiestnený vo fiktívnom meste Summer Bay, pobrežnom meste v Novom Južnom Walese, a sleduje osobné a profesionálne životy ľudí žijúcich v oblasti. Počiatočne sa šou sústredila na rodinu Fletcherovcov, Pippu a Toma Fletchera a ich päť adoptovaných detí Franka Morgana, Carly Morris, Stevena Mathesona, Lynnu Davenportovú a Sally Keatingovú, ktorí sa stali jednými z najdlhšie hrajúcich postáv šou. Šou sa tiež pôvodne a momentálne sústredí na rodinu Stewartovcov. V začiatkoch 2000. rokov sa centrálna zápletky zameriavali na rodinu Sutherlandovcov a neskôr na rodinu Hunterovcov. Domov a preč sa stal populárnym, keď sa premiéroval v roku 1988 a postupne sa stal hitom v Austrálii, a už po niekoľkých týždňoch sa šou zaoberala svojou prvou hlavnou a desivou zápletkou, znásilnením Carly Morrisovej; bola jednou z prvých šou, ktoré zobrazovali takéto zápletky počas časového pásma.
